How Does Your Clinic Compare? A Practical Guide to Veterinary Benchmarks
Benchmarks only help if you compare the right things against the right clinics. A practical guide to benchmarking your GP practice without the spreadsheet pain.
By Helpful.vet Editorial Team
Every practice owner has wondered it: are we doing well, or does it just feel that way? Revenue is up, but so is everyone's. The schedule is full, but the team is tired. Without an external reference point, "how are we doing" is unanswerable.
That is what benchmarks are for. But benchmarking done badly — wrong metrics, wrong comparison group — is worse than not benchmarking at all. Here is how to do it usefully.

What benchmarks can and cannot tell you
A benchmark tells you where you sit relative to similar clinics — it does not tell you why, and it is not a grade. A below-median number is a question to investigate, not a verdict. Used well, benchmarks do one thing brilliantly: they tell you where to look first, so you stop optimizing things that are already fine.
The metrics that actually matter for GP clinics
Skip vanity metrics. For general practice, the signals with the highest decision value are:
Where is your workflow slowing down?
Take the free 3-minute GP Clinic Workflow Score and see where your daily workflow is strong, where friction builds up, and what to improve first.
Get Your Workflow Score- Appointment flow — average visits per doctor per day, and how often the schedule runs behind
- Documentation burden — whether charts close same-day
- Team utilization — technician leverage per doctor
- Callback and follow-up load — how much unfinished communication rolls to tomorrow
- Client experience signals — no-show rate, new client retention after first visit
Each of these connects directly to an operational fix. Benchmark numbers you can act on; ignore the rest.
Compare against the right clinics
A two-doctor rural independent and a nine-doctor corporate suburban practice are different businesses. Comparing across them produces noise. Useful benchmarking controls for clinic type and size at minimum. When you read any benchmark, your first question should be: who exactly is in this comparison pool?
From benchmark to action plan
The output of benchmarking should never be a dashboard — it should be a shortlist. Pick the one or two areas where you sit furthest below the comparison range, diagnose why locally, fix, and re-benchmark next quarter. One improvement cycle per quarter beats ten simultaneous initiatives every time.
Take the next step
Our free GP Practice Benchmark compares your workflow and process maturity against anonymized ranges from similar clinics and hands you a prioritized starting point — it takes under ten minutes. For a short, useful email every couple of weeks, join the newsletter below.
